empty moon

at the haiku

café water bubbles

out of a bamboo pipe

 splashing into the koi pond

tea is brought by

the hipster barista

with her black hair

upswept into a messy bun

we are greeted with

her wide smile as she

informs us that the rain

has already fallen for today

the thin dry

plaintive whistle of

a say’s phoebe downslurs

across the suburban utopia

what transpired

between us last night

as the cars whispered on

the distant boulevard remains unforgiven

discreetly we

talk past each other

while love endures in the face

of the passing of an empty moon
